Parish Catechetical Leader

 

Mrs. Barbara Bacci Yugovich, a native of Illinois, received the Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science, Business, and English from Rosary College, now known as Dominican University, in River Forest, Illinois.  Mrs. Yugovich continued her studies at Marygrove College, in Detroit, Michigan, earning her Michigan Teaching Certification and earning the Master of Pastoral Studies degree in 1986.  She is Nationally Certified as a Master Catechist in the Archdiocese of Detroit and is certified in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Program, Levels One and Two. 

Barbara has ministered in Catholic schools teaching theology at high school and college levels. From 1986-1996, she served as the Associate Director in the Office of Catechesis/Religious Education in the Archdiocese of Detroit.  During those years, Barbara co-founded City Ministers-Say Yes to Jesus, a catechist formation program for Ministers serving in Detroit Parishes.  She wrote and successfully obtained grant funding in the Imani Program, a Black Catholic Catechist Formation Program, from Xavier University in New Orleans, Louisiana.  Barbara made the personal commitment to accompany seven ministers for three summers, with six ministers receiving certification as Master Catechists and one minister earning a Master of Religious Studies.  In 1990, Barbara authored the first Religious Education Self-Study for Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese of Detroit, in collaboration with the Catholic Schools Office.

In 1996, Barbara returned to parish ministry at St. Hugo of the Hills Parish, and later, served as the Director of Religious Education at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish.  In 2015, she returned to St. Hugo’s as the Parish Catechetical Leader, coordinating the Religious Education Program, sacrament preparation, Liturgy of the Word for Children, and the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Program for pre-school age children.

In 2012, Barbara made her covenant as an Associate with the IHM Congregation, in Monroe, Michigan, with whom she shares in prayer, ministry, and community leadership as the representative for IHM Associates.  She currently serves on the IHM Coordinating Council and the IHM Associate Council.

In 2013, Barbara served as one of five U.S. Delegates for the Congress on Catechesis, at the Vatican, held by Pope Francis as part of the Church’s work on the New Evangelization.  In 2014, she returned to Rome to participate in The Pastoral Project of Evangelii Gaudium.  Barbara has published articles on various catechetical topics for OSV and Momentum.

Barbara is married and has two young adult children currently attending college.
