Throughout history, the Catholic Church has been patroness of the arts, preserving and promoting the vast treasury of sacred music. The Saint Hugo's Music Series connects this repertoire with the prayer of the Church, particularly Evening Prayer of the Liturgy of the Hours. On various occasions, a short concert or musical offering in thanksgiving will follow the liturgy.
"When evening approaches and the day is already far spent, evening prayer is celebrated in order that "we may give thanks for what has been given us, or what we have done well, during the day...At this hour we join with the Churches of the East in calling upon the "joy-giving light of that holy glory, born of the immortal, heavenly Father, the holy and blessed Jesus Christ; now that we have come to the setting of the sun and have seen the evening star, we sing in praise of God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. . . ." (GILH 39)
We also pray and sing together during the services of Lessons and Carols and Tenebrae in preparation and anticipation of the great celebrations of Christmas and Easter.
"The Christian faithful who gather together as one to await the Lord’s coming are instructed by the Apostle Paul to sing together psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs (cf. Col 3:16). Singing is the sign of the heart’s joy (cf. Acts 2:46). Thus St Augustine says rightly, ‘Singing is for one who loves.’ There is also the ancient proverb: ‘One who sings well prays twice.’ " (GIRM 39)
The Catholic Community of St. Hugo of the Hills Parish will continue to evangelize and proclaim the Good News that Jesus Christ is Lord. We go forth as a sacramental parish in faith, hope and love, to serve the family of God, and to grow in our faith.
